FDA sends out cease and desist letters

Jan 23, 2008

The FDA recently sent warning letters out to over 25 veterinary pharmacies involved in the illegal resale of compounded Phenylbutazone powder. Citing the recent approval of SUPERIORBUTE® POWDER's drug application, the FDA's division of compliance notifies these pharmacies that compounding flavored phenylbutazone powder is "a violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act" and warns "if your firm has not already done so, your firm should immediately cease the compounding and sales of these illegal phenylbutazone products."

A copy of each letter was also sent to the Executive Director of the local Board Of Pharmacy in the state where the pharmacy is located.

Update: The approval was officially announced in today's Federal Register. Can you tell the FDA is as excited as we are?
